Uterine fibroids, also referred to as fibroids or UFs, are the most common gynecologic non-cancerous tumors found in and around the uterus—the hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman’s pelvis where a fetus (unborn baby) develops and grows.
Another medical term for fibroids is leiomyoma or just “myoma.” Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous) and can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them in the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit. In many cases, they can become very large. It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime and up to 90% of Black women will experience them by age 50.There was a problem reporting this post.
